Peter Kraehenbuhl, born in Tanunda, S. Aust., talks about his childhood and schooling; applying to become a patrol officer in PNG; attending Australian School of Pacific Administration (ASOPA) for training (Nov. 1965); to Port Moresby (Dec. 1965); further training at Kondedobu; his first posting, Karkar Island (1966), duties and experiences; returning to Port Moresby for further study; posting to Bundi, conditions there; further posting to Usino (mid-1967-Sept. 1967); more patrol experiences; local government; colonialism; posting as patrol officer, Officer in Charge, to Simbai in Madang District, description of place and people, extending government influence (1968-1972); explorations into Western Schraders; description of country traversed on patrol, condition of people encountered, bringing them into administration control; the improving and extending of roads, aid posts; law and order, police administration, sorcery, payback killing; gold mining leases at Kumbruf; duties associated with gold mining by local people, economic development in the area; the attraction for local people of working on coastal plantations; cash crops; coffee and land ownership; situation of village and hamlet layout.
