Businessman, prime minister and public servant. In 1918 Bruce was elected to the House of Representatives as the Nationalist Party member for Flinders, near Melbourne. His portfolios included finance, 1921-1923, and external affairs, 1923-1929. He became Prime Minister in 1923 and formed an effective partnership with the Country Party leader, Dr Earle Page. In 1929 Bruce lost the election to the Scullin Labor government. As High Commissioner to Britain, 1933-1945, Bruce represented Australia's interests in London during World War II. He also represented Australia at the League of Nations from 1932 to 1939, with a seat on the Council from 1933 to 1936. In 1947 he received a viscountcy, and became Bruce of Melbourne, the only Australian Prime Minister to become a British peer. In 1947-1957 he was chairman of the British Finance Corporation for Industry Ltd. He was chairman of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Council, 1946-1951. In 1951 Bruce became the foundation chancellor of the Australian National University, serving until 1961.
