- Description:
-
- between 1876 and 1884
- 1 painting : watercolour ; 60.8 x 45.0 cm.
- Summary:
-
The painting shows the onset of industrialisation in rural Victoria with the man-made deviation of the Barwon River, and the construction of a wooden bridge which was built in 1854 and tolled until 1877. The large chimney, to the left, indicates the use of the water course to power industry, presumably the paper mill in this case. The area of Fyansford is where Captain Forster Fyan established a police camp and was the site of the south-west Victorian Protectorate Station for Aborigines. It was also one of the earliest white settlements in the Geelong Region and became a centre for Geelong industry--Acquisitions documentation.
