Heinz Wolfgang Arndt began his career in the 1940's as a macroeconomist after completing his studies at Oxford. In 1946 he he was appointed as senior lecturer in economics at the University of Sydney where he spent four years before his appointment to the chair of economics at the Australian National University. He retired from this position in 1980, but continued to work daily at his office in University House, writing, lecturing, researching and editing an international journal.
