- Topographic map of the region of Karkar Island and Bagabag Island off the northeastern coast of Papua New Guinea. The map was originally published by then Australian army at 1:253,440, then captured and reprinted by the Japanese in 1942, and reprinted again in 1943 with overprinted notes. The Japanese reprints enlarged the scale to 1:250,000 and used only four colours. The map contains significant annotations printed in colour in Japanese. The annotations for Bagabag Island are as follows: note pointing to the entrance to the bay "5 metres width by 30 metres long bridge. Depth is 1.5 metres at low tide. There is no way around on foot. Coral reef along the coast. Hard to move around at night". The other note in red reads "On this island there are two capes, one big and and one small, both capable of plane landings and takeoffs". The annotation in blue reads: "There are only about 30 villagers who can work and it is not much point in getting them as workers. There are only 2 farms which grow taro roots. Village people normally eat bananas and they keep 600-700 pigs". The note in blue for Karkar Island reads: "In total 1,000 villagers were taken for work gangs by the Japanese Army ... to clear the land from nine places on the island ...". The note in red pointing to the northern coast reads: "Bunabuh, port, climate and weather details, southeast wind, good port, ships, over 500 tons can be accommodated". Relief shown by hachures and spot heights.
