-
"Volume I (Books 1-3) covers the voyage out (1800-1802), and vividly describes the expedition's discoveries in Western Australia and Tasmania, as well as its visits to Timor and Sydney. Book IV (Volume 2) details the period when Péron was zoologist on Baudin's voyage and when he met Matthew Flinders at Encounter Bay in 1802. It describes in detail the expedition's discoveries on Kangaroo Island, King Island, the coast of Western Australia and visits to Timor and South Africa. Book V (Volume 2), Dissertations [by François Péron and continued by Louis de Freycinet], offers a translation of scientific papers. Among these, of particular interest, is Leschenault's paper on the botany of Tasmania and the parts of the mainland which he visited. Others papers, written by François Péron, deal with ways to determine the temperature of the sea at different depths, various aspects of Australian wild life and the treatment of dysentery. The Atlas completes the official account of the French expedition of 1800-04 led by Post Captain Nicolas Baudin. The voyagers stopped for varying periods at Mauritius, Cape Town, New Holland, Van Diemen's Land, New South Wales and Timor. The flora, fauna, local inhabitants and settlements in each of these locations were meticulously recorded by the expedition's artists, perfectly supplementing the detailed accounts written by zoologist François Péron."--Publisher's website.

- "When this Atlas was originally published in 1824 [in Paris by Chez Arthurs Bertrand, Libraire, Rue haute-Feuille], its 68 plates comprised the most comprehensive collection of engraved images recording Nicolas Buadin's voyage of 1800-04. Issued with the second edition of the official history of the expedition, Voyage de decouvertes aux terres australes ... (historique), by Francois Péron (1775-1810) and Louis de Freycinet (1779-1842), the Atlas was a significantly revised and expanded version of its 1807-11 predecessor"--Atlas introduction.
- "With the exception of the charts that were drawn by the expedition's cartographer Freycinet, the plates were all engraved from original watercolours and drawings by the two artists on board the expedition, Charles-Alexandre lesueur (1778-1846) and Nicolas-Martin Petit (1777-1804). In accordance with the scientific aspiration of the voyage, the images recorded the indigenous inhabitants and their material culture, the fauna, landscapes and ocastlines of australia and timor (and, to much smaller extent, Africa)."--Atlas introduction.
