Land in this vicinity was originally laid out as portion of the 'Twenty-Seventh Special Survey', claimed by Edward Rowlands and Joseph Gilbert on 17 July 1839. A resurvey was carried out by James Poole in 1842 and called the 'Wiltshire Special Survey'. Charles Flaxman (1806-1869) was employed by George Angas as his chief clerk. Flaxman received a loan from Angas to invest in land in South Australia. He travelled to Australia aboard the Prince George in 1838. He took up land in Tanunda, and Flaxman Valley in the area is named after him.
