- Summary:
-
Justin MacCarthy, was an officer of the British 40th Regiment. The regiment was based in Melbourne from 1852 to 1860, and soldiers were routinely posted to Ballarat during this period. The Government Camp was one of the most important locations in the history of the Eureka Stockade and it was the place to which Trooper King and other victorious members of the regiment brought the captured Eureka flag. The Camp was established in 1851 to help maintain order on the newly-discovered Victorian gold fields and was in a strategic position with a view of Ballarat Flat. The image gives pride of place to the British flag, and shows the camp's defensive wall, buildings and tents--Information from acquisition documentation.
