Biography/History

A land party was left at Commonwealth Bay near Adelie Land early in January, 1912, and a further party about 1,500 miles westwards in Queen Mary Land during the following month. The vessel left this second base on 21st February, 1912 and reached Hobart on 12th March, 1912.

Notes

Undated reproduction of a printed map used to show the sea-track of the Aurora in 1912 under the command of Captain John King Davis and Australasian Antarctic Expedition leader Douglas Mawson. Note that the sea-tracks are time-dated and it can be seen the difficulties in manoeuvring the ship through the ice and bergs. The map shows the Antarctic coastline at Broken Glacier (later named Shackleton Glacier) and the establishment of the second base in Queen Mary Land (not named on map). This was followed by a return journey to Australia starting 21 February 1912. The map includes pencilled annotation headed "Second Base" describing errors in navigation. Another block of pencilled annotation has been crossed out. Relief shown by contours, bathymetric tints, spot heights, and soundings.

National Library's copy is stamped in blue "Records, Information and Research Section, National Mapping Office" and "10 Oct 1955" and marked in blue crayon "S1/35(42)". Also annotated in pencil "Mitchell Library, uncat mss., Set 171, no. 65"
