After establishing two bases on the Antarctic coastline, the Australasian Antarctic Expedition was an Australian scientific team that explored part of Antarctica between 1911 and 1914. It was led by the Australian geologist Douglas Mawson, who In December 1912 Captain Davis revisited the Antarctic to relieve the two parties who had wintered there. A calamity befell Mawson's own sledging party and Lieut. B. E. S. Ninnis and Dr. X. Mertz both lost their lives. Mawson's arrival back at Winter Quarters was delayed for so long, that the 'Aurora' was forced to leave five men for another year to prosecute a search for the missing party.
- Notes:
-
- Topographic map showing the MacKellar Islets in the vicinity of Cape Denision, the Australasian Antarctic Expedition's eastern base in Commonwealth Bay. What had happened was Mawson returned to the base later than he was expected, and he could see the Aurora sailing away on the horizon. He contacted them by radio and the ship turned around and headed back to his base. But the ice near the shore was already too thick and Captain Davis of the Aurora had no choice but to put a rescue party ashore and return immediately to Australia before it became trapped in the ice. Relief is shown by contours, heights and soundings in fathoms.
