Cigler, a linguist and educationalist, particularly in the teaching of English as a second language speaks of her family background and education in Melbourne during the Depression, left school very early due to poliomylitis, how her parents sold meat at the Victoria Market and then moved to a farm in Oakleigh, how when they moved to St. Kilda she was enthused by the local Jewish community contrasting with an unhappy home life, how in 1948 she lost a lung to tuberculosis, how she met Michael Cigler and later married him in 1955, how she assisted her husband with his tertiary studies, began teaching migrants English without educational qualifications in the 1960s, how she gained her Masters in linguistics while living in Britain in the early 1970s, her appointment in 1974 as research officer for the Migrant Project of the Australia an Council of Educational Research, her professional relationship with Mary Fisher leading to a lectureship at Mercy College (Ascot Vale) and introducing a Graduate Diploma in Multicultural Studies.
Cigler discusses how she continued her work in multicultural and linguistic education until she retired in 1988 along with her husband, how in 1985 she and her husband published the textbook "Australia : a land of immigrants" despite many tribulations, how she returned to Mercy College in 1989 on a sessional basis to establish a fee-based college for teaching migrants English, the loss of her husband to cancer later followed by her mother in 1992.
