Biography/History

Born 1942 in Vienna, Austria, Günter Schilder is an acknowledged expert in Dutch historical cartography, and a leading authority on the history of geography. While a doctoral student in geography and history at the University of Vienna, he carried out research at the Dutch archives to trace the history of the discovery of Australia by Dutch explorers and was granted his doctorate in 1970. He moved to the Netherlands where he worked at Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Publishers under Nico Israel for several years. He then became assistant to Professor Cornelis Koeman, Professor of Cartography, University of Utrecht. In 1981 he was offered an additional chair at University of Utrecht, then and now the only historical cartography chair in the world. Here he began his speciality in rare Dutch maps of the 16th to 18th centuries. He produced his now famous nine-part magnum opus, the Monumenta Cartographia Neerlandica, exceeding the work of all of his predecessors over the last hundred years. This research demonstrated all the links between the explorative history of the world, the persons who played a role in the production of maps, the techniques used in preparing and printing maps, and the history of art in the Netherlands. He has been active in promoting maps of historical importance through the publication of high-quality atlases in demand around the world. As a lecturer and educator he has promoted the field of historical cartography to academic students, volunteers and the general public, establishing the Explorkart research programme within which both professional researches and amateurs were able to publish the results of their investigations. This system is unique in the world. Nowhere else is it possible for non-academically trained cartographic researchers to publish full-fledged research under professional supervision.

Notes

A liber amicorum or festschrift, a book of essays assembled by friends and colleagues to honour the pioneer work undertaken by Günter Schilder, a leading expert in historical cartography. The main volume consists of some 48 essays in one of four languages. Each essay includes a personal message to Schilder accompanied by a picture of its author and his signature, then the essay itself. The essays cover many subjects, broadly cartobibliography, significant mapmakers, map hunting and identification, the role of atlases, map collections of interest, map usage and a number of more personal essays congratulating Schilder on his achievements and leadership in a field often overlooked and underestimated. A very useful compendium of essay summaries in English is included along with a general index. The accompanying portfolio of 15 maps consists of facsimiles of two six-sheet views of Vienna including three sheets of text.

Accompanying portfolio contains 15 facsim. views & text from two works.
