- Summary:
-
"Wangkatja is a language of the Goldfields region, Western Australia. Tindale (1974) labels the language Wangata and Nangatadjara. Douglas (1964) labels the language Wangkatja. Speakers refer to Wangkatja being the same as Kuwarra. Kuwarra itself is also used as a name for Tjupan. Other speakers have referred to the name of the language as being Wangkatha and Wangkayi. It is possible that "Wangkatja" is a generic term for a western desert person or language. The term Wangkatja now is used to refer to a speech variety spoken by western desert people of the Laverton-Kalgoorlie region (Marmion 2008). There are few fluent speakers of the language, but many more people have a partial or passive understanding of the language, or who identify as being of Wangkatja descent. Wangkatja is a Pama-Nyungan language of the Wati family, along with several other western desert languages."--Introduction.
