Biography/History

Composer with a background in classical music, who is widely regarded as the 'father' of electronic music. Cary's first conventional composition, Partita for Piano, was performed in 1947. His first electronic commission was in 1955, an accompaniment to the radio play The Japanese Fishermen. Cary co-designed the VCS3 synthesiser, which became an icon of the emerging art of electronic music and was widely used by both avant-garde classical composers and rock artists. During his career, Cary produced works for both conventional and electronic disciplines, often combining the two, for concert hall, cinema, television and radio.
