MS 9198 includes over 600 pieces of correspondence pertaining to personal and business matters; notebooks; research notes; drafts of published and unpublished screenplays, novels, and plays including The one day of the year; reviews; newspaper clippings; photographs; printed material; papers relating to Alan Seymour's travels and domestic life. Major correspondents include Seymour's sisters, nieces, nephews, Ron Baddeley, Sumner Locke Elliot, Margaret Fink, Gillian Armstrong, Michael Thornbill, Katharine Brisbane, Brandon Lunney, Sheila Geddes and Laurence Collinson (12 boxes, 1 fol. packet).

- Biography/History:

Playwright, scriptwriter and author. Alan Seymour was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1927. Seymour's career has included work as a freelance writer, radio announcer, reviewer, film critic, television script editor and producer. He is best known in Australia for his play, The one day of the year (1960), a critique of the annual Australian observance of Anzac Day to commemmorate the controversial Gallipoli campaign of the First World War. From 1961-1995 he resided and worked in England and Turkey where he established a reputation for his film and television screenplays, playwriting, novels, articles and reviews. He returned to live in Australia in 1995. The awards Seymour has won include the BAFTA Award in 1984, for Box of delights. In 2002 Seymour was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Western Australia, and, in 2007, he received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the arts.
