Biography/History

Squatting south of the Murrumbidgee River began around 1830 and 25 sq. miles of the Tidbinbilla Valley, called Rock Valley near the Tidbinbilla River, was first occupied by a squatter, George Webb. Rock Valley Homestead is one of the oldest remaining homesteads in the ACT. Originally built in 1885 by George Green in 1885 with a large garden, Eddy Green, grandson of George Green, redesigned the garden in the 1940s, which subsequently won an award. It is located on the Church Rock Heritage Loop in Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. The Homestead and its gardens were severely damaged in the 2003 bushfires but by 2008 the Tidbinbilla Pioneers Association had been instrumental in the restoration of the heritage-listed building and its award winning garden design.
