Summary

MS Acc09/65 chiefly comprises papers accumulated separately by Lister and Edna Hopkins during the course of their careers. There is extensive correspondence, both family and business, including a number of letters written while on various postings, providing a picture of life in the British colonies of the time. There are also the diaries of Lister Hopkins, narrative in style, from his time in Palestine, Jamaica, Lebanon and following his retirement, together with a number of subject files he created. Also included are early family history papers relating to a biography written by Lister Hopkins of his father titled, Francis Lister Hopkins 1878-1926 (1993).

Biography/History

Lister George Hopkins had a long and distinguished career as a demographer and statistician. After completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Queensland in 1931, he went on to study mathematics at Oxford. Hopkin's career appointments included Senior Assistant Statistician, Palestine (1935); Vital Statistics Adviser, Development and Welfare, West Indies (1950-1951); Senior Economist (1951-1958) and later Assistant Statistician (1961-1975) with the Australian Bureau of Statistics. He also provided technical assistance for the United Nations in the West Indies (1958-1960). Following his retirement in 1975, Hopkins undertook assignments on behalf of the UN in Sudan and Cyprus. In 1950 Hopkins was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his work in the West Indies.

Edna Mary Hopkins (née Leven) trained as a teacher and became instrumental in the development of the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program in Australia. In 1968 Hopkins was appointed as the first English as a second language teacher in the public school system in the Australian Capital Territory. In 1976 she received a Commonwealth Grant to establish the Secondary Introductory English Centre (SIEC). She established the first classes and developed, implemented and evaluated SIEC programs. In 1993 Hopkins was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to education, particularly through English as a second language teaching and to multicultural education.
