Julalikari Council formed in 1985 is a town camp organisation of about 900 Aboriginal people in the remote Northern Territory town of Tennant Creek; whose total population is approximately 3,000. With reduced mining activity, the town's economic base had contracted, enterprises had suffered, and the white population had declined. Alcohol abuse is a major problem in the community, both indoors and outside. The Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation of Tennant Creek has agreed to facilitate 99 year sub-leases of town camps as part of an agreement with the Australian and Northern Territory Governments to upgrade housing.
