Spencer Skipper (1848-1903) was the eldest son of John Michael Spencer and grandson of Robert Thomas, one of the founders of the Register, South Australia's first newspaper. Skipper was for many years the shipping reporter for the city dailies, as well as war correspondent and drama critic at the Register. Skipper used the pen name Hugh Kalyptus for his satirical verse.
