MS Acc09.140 comprises the illustrated "fair copy" of a journal written by George Henry Haydon documenting a six-month stay on French Island, Victoria, with William Ker. The original journal was created in 1843-1844 but lost in 1844. It was found by a local indigenous person and returned to Haydon (by then in England) by Thomas Bury in 1868. The fair copy made by Haydon was augmented with new illustrations and includes a copy of Bury's letter to Haydon and two sketches from the original journal. With the fair copy are letters of Ker to Haydon, 1860-1863; a short handwritten biography of Haydon; and, a notebook titled "Chronicles of early Melbourne", containing news cuttings and notes, 1881-1892 (1 phase box).
- Biography/History:
-
Writer and artist. George Henry Haydon was born on 26 August, 1822 at Heavitree, Devon, England. He emigrated to Melbourne in July 1840, returning to England in 1845. Having been apprenticed to an architect in Exeter in 1837, Haydon established himself in Melbourne as an architect, designing a number of cottages and villas and warehouses, notably for JB Were. Haydon was one of Melbourne's first drawing masters and he also sold sketches to the papers. On his return to England he wrote two books, Five years' experience in Australia Felix (1846) and The Australian emigrant: a rambling story, containing as much fact as fiction (1854), and lectured on emigration throughout England. In 1853 Haydon was appointed Steward of Bethlem Hospital, a position he held until his retirement in 1889.
