Folkloric recording. Jon Cope, born 1965 in New Plymouth in New Zealand talks about his family background; the family settling in Western Australia during the mineral boom in late 1960's; his education; tutoring Aboriginal students (1988) in a welfare diploma course; his awareness of racism; living in Sydney; his musical interests and influences; attending folk festivals, including the National Folk Festival in Sutherland; his love of music and writing his own music and songs; his band, Car Thieves; playing acoustic music, gigs, the response of audience; the music scene in Sydney (1990); recording a demo; moving to Melbourne, line up of the band; moving from Melbourne to Perth and the formation of band The Last Supper Club, music played; starting the band Press Gang (c.1991/92), their repertoire, being linked with Guinness promotion; travelling to Dublin late 1993, learning songs, the Australian content; the band, Mucky Duck; his travels in Ireland, the music scene.
Cope discusses playing in a band and being involved in community life; working in London, the music scene and folk festivals; moving to Austria and playing Irish music in bar; travelling around and meeting musicians; returning to study (1996); organising tours in semester breaks; his degree in Arts Management at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts; rejoining old band, the name change to Fling, touring festivals; leaving band in 1999; marketing work in theatre company and film and television institute; working for KULCHA, its history, description of establishment, name change; KULCHA projects and focus on cultural diversity projects, statistical information on the demographic changes and role; creating opportunities for refugees; a French Music Festival, diversity of performances; the musical focus of today's youth; artists perception of self and performance.
