Summary

The collection comprises photographs and copies of writings and correspondence with Alec (A.D.) and Penelope Hope, and family; copies of correspondence with Manning Clark, 1970-1973; and a typescript titled "The sexual revolution as big flop". The collection also comprises correspondence from John Christopher (Chris) Eade to Magarey (his then wife), whilst she was in England researching her PhD in History in the 1970's. In addition to describing domestic life, these letters address subjects such as the process of appointing a Director to the then new Humanities Research Centre at the Australian National University, and include references to Nicolas Jose, Professor John Hardy, Bob and Rosemary Brissenden, Joan Allen, Ian Donaldson, Ged Martin, Janet McCalman, Grahame Johnstone, David Cottrell, Netta and Arthur Burns, John LaNuaze, Alec (A.D.) Hope and Penelope Hope.

Biography/History

Feminist, historian and academic. Susan Margaret Magarey was born in 1943 and graduated with degrees in history and English literature from the University of Adelaide and the Australian National University. Magarey is the author of a number of books including, Unbridling the tongues of women: a biography of Catherine Helen Spence (1985), Passions of the first wave feminists (2001), and Roma the first: a biography of Dame Roma Mitchell (with Kerrie Round, 2007). She has also edited several publications including, Writing lives: feminist biography and autobiography (1992), Debutante nation: feminism contests the 1890s (1993), and Living history: essays on history as biography (2005). Her other publications include over 60 articles and book chapters. Magarey was also founding editor of the journal Australian feminist studies. She is Adjunct Professor in History at the University of Adelaide where she was founding director of the Research Centre for Women's Studies. In 2006 Magarey was appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for pioneering women's studies as a scholarly discipline.
