Jane Brazier talks about her family background; her education, university degree and introduction to Social Work; her thoughts on critical aspects of training for new graduates and her early work experience; taking on a management role six months after graduation; the nature of early welfare work; currently chairing a trust for people who lived at Sister Kate's Children's Home; Court work; her involvement with Aboriginal families; the public profile of the welfare department during early working days; child protection; engaging families and building connections; adoptions and foster care assessments; the assimilation of Indigenous babies; working part time after having her children; a move to Jakarta in 1975 for four years; returning to social work in Sydney; working with the Montrose Child Protection Unit; her transition from direct practice to work in policy; moving back to Perth and to practice in a child protection unit.
Brazier discusses The Carter Review; her thoughts about the centralisation and de-centralisation of services; the need for more attention to be given to prevention; the introduction of mandatory reporting; the construction of children's place in policy; children's rights, obligations and expectations; working with the Christian Brothers during the mid 1980s; policy and program development in Perth; working for the Authority for Intellectually Handicapped Persons; the establishment of the Bureau for Disability Services; the change of government; leadership positions; setting up a Family Children's Policy Office working for a minister, the challenges and innovation; the extent to which her social work experience has framed policy tasks; constraints of working with government; her involvement in an inquiry into the situation of women and young girls in the Swan Valley Nyungah Community resulting in a conviction; her decision to resign; the influence of early childhood relationships on her later work; her experience of being a women in leadership roles.

Jane Brazier was the former Director General of the Department for Community Development in W.A. She has held a number of senior management positions in the public sector in both N.S.W. and W.A.
