Summary

"Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) has been identified as an alternative to axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) in determining if early breast cancer cells have spread to the surrounding lymph nodes. The primary research questions of this systematic review assessed: the benefits and harms of using SNB compared to ALND to detect cancer spread in early (operable) breast cancer, cancer recurrence and survival outcomes for patients receiving SNB. The secondary research questions of this review assessed: the optimal technique for SNB in early (operable) breast cancer including different detection, agents and different injection sites, different treatments after a positive sentinel node (SN) is detected."--Executive summary.
