The Hungerford Suspension Bridge was officially opened on May 3, 1845 but dismantled in 1860 to make way for a railway bridge.
In 1848 the South Western railway was extended from the Nine Elms terminus to the new station at Waterloo in the centre of London. The dotted line running northeast from Waterloo was a proposed extension into the City of London but considered too expensive to construct at that time. Eventually the solution was determined to be a tube railway, hugely cheaper than a surface line as it avoided nearly all land acquisition that would have been required on the surface. The final result was the Waterloo & City Railway line that did not formally open until 11 July 1898.
- Notes:

- Engraved plan of London City, extending west to east from Hyde Park to the West India Docks and north to south from Victoria Park to Peckham New Town. Hungerford Suspension Bridge is shown, as well as a proposed extension to South Western railway running northeast from Waterloo indicated by a dashed line. Views of the Houses of Parliament at bottom border and a general overview of London at top right corner are included.
