- Summary:
-
"First and only edition of this popular voyage by Gerrit Vermeulen (1668-1674). The Amsterdam publisher Jan Claesz. Ten Hoorn (1671-1715) explains in his preface that he got possession of the papers by accident, and hopes the reader will find them of interest, especially as the book contains a full history of the recent war with Makassar. The main conditions of the peace agreed upon between the King of Makassar and the director of the Dutch East Indian Company, Speelman on November 18, 1667 are given. The book further contains interesting descriptions of all places visited during the voyage, with much attention to the life and customs of the natives: the Salt Islands, Cape of Good Hope, extensively on life at Batavia and Java, Celebes, the Moluccas, Ambon, Timor, etc. The delicate engravings depict a ship in a gale (p.6), a tea ceremony (p. 29), a Chinese festival in Batavia (p. 32), Chinese funeral ceremonies (p. 33), the court of Makasar (p. 72) and costumes of the Makasar people (p. 77)" -- Antiquariaat Forum, AbeBooks listing, viewed 4 March 2010.
