The memoirs commence with a brief account of his childhood at Penygroes, Carnvarvonshire, his decision to emigrate, and the voyage from London to Melbourne via Suez on S.S. "Orvieto" in 1922. They describe in detail his varied life in the next 12 years, including working as a farm labourer at Whitlesea, travelling from Melbourne to Mackay as a swagman, canecutting in Queensland, shearing in Queensland, N.S.W. and Victoria, fruitpicking in the Mildura district, working on coastal vessels, shearing in New Zealand, buying horses and shipping them to India in 1925-1926, travels in India, Burma and Ceylon, work on farms in Victoria, rabbit trapping in N.S.W., droving cattle in Queensland, and work as a private detective in Melbourne. In the later chapters there are many references to the Depression, ending with Jones' decision to return to Wales in 1934.

William Jones emigrated from Wales in 1922 and spent 12 years in Australia as a farm labourer, shearer, canecutter, fruitpicker, swagman and drover. He returned to Wales in 1934.
