- Biography/History:
-
John Michael Joshua, known as Jack, was born in Sydney in 1893. In early 1915 he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force as a mechanic in the Australian Flying Corps, and was assigned to what was to become 3 Squadron, serving through to the end of the war. After the end of the war Jack stayed in England to train with Robey and Co., an engineering firm, and towards the end of 1919 returned to Australia. On return to Australia, Jack returned to the country and held various jobs, including irrigation mechanic, engineering and motor sales. During the Second World War his engineering firm in Temora gained a contract with the Department for Munitions for fabrication of items according to supplied plans. After an injury outside of the shop Jack decided to sell up his engineering business, and purchased the photographic studio in Temora, having had a long interest in photography, including taking a camera with him on his deployment in World War 1. After retiring from business, Jack returned to Sydney, working part time for a friend with a photographic studio in North Sydney before concentrating on photography as a hobby.
