Summary

Folkloric recording. Terry Muscat, trade unionist and Maltese immigrant, speaks of the village life in Mellieha, Malta where he was born and grew up, his migration to Melbourne in 1956 with his wife Mary, his brother Joe Muscat, how he began his career in the Australian trade union movement starting with his election to the Branch Committee of Management of the Federated Ironworkers' Association in 1959, his work as a foundation member of the ACTU's Migrant Workers' Committee, his election as the State President of the Federation of Industrial Manufacturing & Engineering Employees (FIMEE), his election to the National Executive of the Australian Workers' Union (AWU) in 1995, his leadership of the Maltese community in Melbourne such as President of the Malta Star of the Sea organisation (1956-62), founding member of the Maltese Community Council of Victoria in 1962, and President of the Anglo-Maltese Association in 1977, awarded the Member of the Order of Australia in 1992 and a Member of the Order of the Republic of Malta in 1997 in recognition of his services to trade unionism and to the Maltese community.
