Summary

MS Acc09.036 comprises research material accumulated by Bruce Bennett when writing his biography of Peter Porter titled Spirit in exile, Peter Porter and his poetry. The collection also includes correspondence with Porter and others, and a large group of photocopies of reviews and articles by and about Porter from the 1950s to 1989 (3 boxes, 1 fol. box).

The papers in the Acc10.114 instalment comprise correspondence, articles and interviews on microcassette, all relating to Peter Porter. The interviewees include Peter Porter, Christine Porter, Anthony Thwaite, Jill Neville, William Trevor (Cox) and Gavin Ewart. The interviews were conducted by Bruce Bennett during research for his biography of Peter Porter, Spirit in exile, published in 1991 (1 packet).

Biography/History

Academic, writer and editor. Bruce Harry Bennett was born and received his early education in Perth, Western Australia. A Rhodes Scholar, Bennett was a graduate of the universities of Western Australia, Oxford and London. From 1968-1992 Bennett taught at the University of Western Australia, where he was Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Studies in Australian Literature and edited the literary journal Westerly. In 1993, he commenced a long association with the Australian Defence Force Academy campus of the University of New South Wales, where he was emeritus professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Amongst other literature-related activities, Bennett held visiting appointments at universities in Asia, Europe and North America, served on the Australian National Commission for UNESCO from 1985-1990 and wrote and edited numerous books, articles and reports on Australian literature, culture and society. Bennett received wide recognition for his service to Australian literature and university education, including being made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1993. Bennett died in Canberra in April 2012.
