Summary

This report examines the issues behind the high rates of violent crimes committed by Indigenous people in Australia. It presents findings from research on the prevalence and nature of, and risk factors for, Indigenous violent offending. Sections are included on recidivism, victim and offender characteristics, juvenile violence, drug use, childhood experiences of violence, exposure to pornography, education, employment, income and housing factors, physical health and disability, psychological distress and mental health issues, geographic location and remoteness, and access to services. The report also discusses predicting violent recidivism, evidence and data sources, and gaps in the knowledge.
