- Biography/History:
-
Sir George Gilbert Aimé Murray, renowned British scholar and political activist, was born in Sydney in 1866, son of Sir Terence Aubrey Murray, pastoralist and politician, and his second wife Agnes Ann (née Edwards). After Sir Terence's death in 1873, Murray moved to England with his mother and brother, (Sir) John Hubert Plunkett Murray. He attended Merchant Taylor's School, then St John's College, Oxford. Murray achieved the prestigious appointment of Professor of Greek at the University of Glasglow by the age of 23. In 1889 he married Lady Mary Henrietta Howard at Castle Howard, Yorkshire. Murray was appointed Regis Professor of Greek at Oxford in 1908, where his academic work produced translations of classical Greek literature encouraging a refreshed appreciation of this material among a new generation of English readers. His writings on Greek literature also influenced the historical and contextual perception of this period of history. Murray was a strong advocate for sustained international peace. He served as chairman of the League of Nations Union in 1923-1938 and went on to serve as president of that organisation's successor, the United Nations Association. In 1941, he was awarded the Order of Merit. Murray died in 1957 and his incomplete autobiography was published in 1960.
