The Bathurst 1000 (currently called the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000) is a 1,000-kilometre (620 mile) touring car race held annually at Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. The event was originally held on the 20th or November 1960 at Phillip Island in Victoria over 500 miles (800 kilometres), and named the Armstrong 500. It was originally intended to determine which car had the best combination of speed, performance, and reliability. The name later changed to the Hardie Ferodo 500, the Hardie Ferodo 1000, and then the Bathurst 1000.
