Decree on rebuilding Lisbon after the Great Earthquake of November 1755, which destroyed most of the city, based on the most radical of several plans put forward in December 1755 by Manuel da Maia, chief engineer to the realm . This option proposed razing the entire Baixa quarter and laying out new streets "without restraint" and was accepted by the king and his Prime Minister Sebastião de Melo (the Marquis of Pombal), whose name appears after the king's at the end of the decree.
