- Summary:

This multiple perspective inquiry was designed to understand the perceptions and experiences of three high school literacy coaches involved with the South Carolina Reading Initiative-High Schools (SCRI-HS). The data was collected over two years to show the evolution of a process of "becoming" a coach and the shift in an individual's thinking and practice. A qualitative research methodology that combined ethnographic methods, naturalistic phenomenological and biographical methods was used to elicit deeper and more interconnected understandings of the research process.
NVivo was used to manage the data and assist with cross-case analyses. Analysis of the coaches' perceptions and experiences revealed that a theory of "becoming" a coach may involve a set of components including a coach's shift in conceptual identity which is determined by an individual's theoretical orientation, and understandings about educational change and school culture; a coach's beginning understandings about the practicalities of coaching; a coach's enacting new learning about coaching; and a coach's having access to ongoing support with differing contexts.
