Summary

First basic ethonographic work in Cape York Peninsula, apart from Roths; deals with Kawadji (easterners), tribes of the east coast, north of Princess Charlotte Bay, especially Koko-Jao; hero cult of Iwai saltwater crocodile, with drums and masked dancers, appears to have come from Torres Strait, being superimposed on totemic clan and moiety system; saga of Iwai given, with many original terms included; drums and other ceremonial objects described; two initiation ceremonies covered in detail in text and plates - Okaintja (Iwai) and Monka (Paiyan, the rainbow snake); personal and clan totemism of Koko-Jao; 15-page glossary includes main ritual terms.
