Linguist and anthropologist. Ordained an Anglican minister in 1926, and shortly after became Reader in Oceanic languages at Sydney University. In New Guinea he successfully established communication with the newly discovered tribes of New Guinea. Capell published a large number of works on language study and the classification and structure of language. His works include Handbook of Australian languages, A new approach to Australian linguistics, and linguistic surveys of Australia, South-Western Pacific, and New Guinea.
