MS Acc10.185 comprises the official letter dated 18 December 1816 to Louis de Freycinet signed by the scientists Vauquelin, Desfontaines and Jussieu, professors of the Muséum d'histoire naturelle, Paris. The letter states their support for the collection of natural history specimens on the L'Uranie voyage and the appointment of a naturalist for this purpose.

Louis Nicolas Vauquelin was the French chemist who discovered the elements beryllium and chromium, and isolated asparagine, the first amino acid to be identified.
French botanist René Louiche Desfontaines was appointed professor of botany at the Jardin des Plantes in 1786, and later became director of the Muséum d'histoire naturelle and president of the Academy of Sciences, and was elected to the Legion d'honneur.
Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, French botanist, was professor of botany at the Jardin des Plantes from 1770 to 1826, and elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1788. He was notable as the first to propose a natural classification of flowering plants and much of his system remains in use today.

- Single sheet of paper with printed letterhead, folded to letter size, 25.0 x 20.0 cm., and showing old folds. Written in a neat secretarial hand in ink and signed by the three French scientists.
