Leo Schofield born at Waverley, Sydney, recalls his early years at Brewarrina, N.S.W. where the family ran one of the family owned local pubs; family move to Stanmore, N.S.W.; his early education and secondary level studies at Christian Brothers College at Lewisham, Sydney; winning a Commonwealth scholarship to attend university; taking on a cadetship in 1954 with The Sydney Morning Herald to pay for university tuition fees; his theatrical interests at university which he continued to pursue after leaving the academic course. Schofield talks about his involvement with the Sydney University Players, a theatre production group; his career move to advertising; his work with the Independent Theatre Company; his trips to England to pursue his theatrical interests; the small & limited theatrical world in Sydney during the 1950s.
Schofield speaks about his experiences from the 1960s onwards as a writer and journalist with various Sydney newspapers; becoming the first food writer to have a newspaper column reviewing restaurants; the first columnist to do a book on eating guide in Sydney; in 1984 re-establishing the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide. He speaks about his interest in cultural festivals and accepting the position of running the Melbourne Festival for 3 years (1994, 1995, 1996); his role as organiser of the Sydney Arts Festival (1998, 1999 and 2000), the Olympic & Para-Olympic Arts Festival (2000), the Federation Festival (2001).
