Biography/History

"Ballarat, 1856: the height of the gold rush; humanity flocked there, including thousands of Chinese. They were discriminated against and forced to live under protection in special camps. Robert Bell, later nicknamed 'Chinese Bell', was born in Middlesex, England, and after studying Chinese culture and language for four years, he moved to Ballarat, stood up for the Chinese. In his Main Road office, he translated and hand carved wooden printing blocks for the earliest Australian Chinese newspaper The Chinese Advertiser, a newspaper with an extraordinary print history and remarkable historic and cross cultural interest. Soon the paper became bi-lingual, retitled the English and Chinese Advertiser, possibly the first newspaper published in Chinese with another language"--Postcard from Central Highlands Regional Library Corporation.
