Folkloric recording. Ern Sharman born in the Deloraine district, Tasmania, talks about his family background; his father's farm, mixed; life in the early days; horses used on the farm, swing plough; his schooling; leaving school, aged 14, working on the family farm and others; the Great Depression; driving bullocks, terminology and other aspects of bullocks; beginning of war years , working on a dairy; being called up for National Service training at Brighton army camp; spending 15 months in New Guinea, his role in the Army Signal Corps in the Owen Stanley Ranges; his discharge in 1946; becoming a carpenter, the changes in the building industry; his marriage in 1956; the cost of houses in the 1950's and a new house in 1964; the big builders at that time and the building industry in general; the music his father played; taking up the accordion when a child; taking his banjo mandolin to New Guinea; playing music in nursing homes; learning to play the musical saw, explaining the technique.
