Ron Critoph speaks about his family background; siblings; his early memories of London and schooling; their life in England and pets; his mother's death and father's ill health; how the brothers were split up among relatives, then all sent to a Barnardo's home (Epsom); father's goodbye and gift to the boys; the children from the home being sent to Australia; the voyage on SS Barrabool and experiences on board; their arrival in Sydney (September 1934), being sent to Mowbray Park, Picton; their accommodation, conditions, punishments, being separated from brother, farm labour, his education; their daily duties, religion, food and discipline; his bursary to Hurlstone Agricultural Boys High School; school uniforms; working the farm at Hurlstone; friendships formed; the Holmes family; subjects studied and results; sport; the dormitories and staffing; going on the study medicine, University of Sydney (1942), graduating and becoming a Resident (doctor) at Canterbury hospital; brother Wal's WWII service; life with the Holmes family, card games, cooking; becoming a General Practioner (GP), building a home with surgery attached; his marriage (1946) and children; the stolen generation and the Apology; brother's careers and lives; daughter's lives and careers; holidays; surgery hours; locums; his feelings about England, nationality, citizenship and passport; retirement; luck throughout his life, friends; support from wife's family; his Medical finals, salary and conditions as newly qualified doctor. Reflects on his life and gratitude to Barnados; his reactions to the book about the Barnados home published by The Oaks Historical Society; the child migration scheme; his nickname; influences; talking with brothers about their childhood; his impressions of Barnados and feels they acted with the best of intentions.
