Ball talks about his family background; childhood; schooling at Timboon High School and going to Australian National University in 1965 on a national undergraduate scholarship and deciding to do an economics degree. He also discusses the place of religion and politics in the family. Ball then describes the contents of a scrapbook that he made as the result of a trip that he took with his mother and three children in 1993. He then talks about Professor Fin Crisp and Sir John Crawford and his decision to work in the strategic studies area. Ball then describes his experiences in U.S.A. while working on his Ph. D at Columbia University, New York ca. 1970 and his return in 1972 to Harvard on a fellowship. He then gives his views on Kissinger.
Ball then talks about being given one of two posts at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at ANU in 1974; Sir Arthur Tange; working as co-author with Jol Langtry on publications on defence; his work on nuclear strategy and the reasons behind the severing of relationships with Rand Corporation. He then discusses working with former president, Jimmy Carter; Kim Beazley as Defence Minister; colleagues at ANU and his knowledge of CIA and its operations. Ball then talks about his current work and salary; social life and his relationship with the media.
