The Jamesville-dewitt junior-senior high school and the reading and language arts center, Syracuse university, jointly established a demonstration center at Jamesville-dewitt for the purpose of improving reading instruction in grades seven through 12. The center operated from September 1963 through June 1966 under the sponsorship of the project English program, United States office of education. The center served two purposes. An all-school reading program was organized and made available for observation, and a filmed inservice course on reading instruction in secondary schools was produced, field tested, and revised. The resultant 10 motion picture lessons were the followng--organizing reading programs, analyzing reading achievement, the handicapped reader, vocabulary development, developing comprehension skills, reading to remember, the library and the reading program, developing skills for reading literature, efficient reading, and report from the reading coordinator. Manuals, one for each of the 15 sessions comprising the course, accompany the films. An increasing demand for the films and the improvements apparent in reading instruction in the classrooms of teachers who had observed at the center testify to its success. The procedures used in establishing the center and in producing the films are described. A discussion entitled "teaching reading and physics simultaneously" is appended. (rh)
