"Wedgwood knew Joseph Banks the President of the Royal Society at the time of this medallion's production, as he had been admitted to the Royal Society in 1783. Banks was an extremely wellknown and important person in the mid 1780s due to his scientific interest and discoveries during the Endeavour voyage with James Cook"--Information from acquisitions documentation.
