A national survey of vocational guidance in secondary education was conducted in the fall of 1966. The purposes of the survey included: (1) to describe the present status of guidance in public secondary schools in terms of services, functions of counselors, and student contact, (2) to provide a reference point for future surveys, (3) to compare the viewpoints of school administrators, counselors, teachers, students and parents on guidance issues, (4) to compare guidance programs by type of secondary school, (5) to identify needed changes in the professional education of the counselor, and (6) to identify needed research in program planning. Six types of public secondary schools were surveyed: urban comprehensive, rural comprehensive, urban general academic, rural general academic, urban vocational, and are vocational-technical. Principals, counselors, teachers, parents, and students representing 355 schools from 48 states returned a total of 6,484 completed questionnaires. The survey findings were reported in 62 tables. Detailed comparisons were made both by type of respondent and type of school, as well as broader analyses of major issues. (CH)
