This teacher's manual grows out of a major research project that is attempting to discover the most effective methods of increasing motivation of the adolescent. The methods under study are combined into special courses that are given in schools by teachers, not in laboratories by research scientists nor in clinics by psychotherapists. "Pyschological education" is described as a new educational movement of which the achievement motivation course is a part. The history, goals, methods, and rationale for this movement are discussed in some detail. Also, a fairly detailed course outline is provided to suggest how one course was put together. Chapter 2 is a set of instructions and suggestions put together to allow potential motivation course teachers to experience a course themselves. Chapter 3 builds on this experience by providing a review of the research on achievement motivation. Chapter 4 is a detailed, down-to-earth description of what goes in an achievement motivation course for students. The appendixes include an array of games, case studies, and role plays for achievement motivation courses. A related document is VT 008 373.
