Summary

Barry Jones, born in Geelong, Victoria (1932), discusses his family and family background; childhood memories; reading and his facility with language and memory; places he lived in Melbourne; studying law; being actively interested in social and political issues from a young age and during university; working in the Victorian Titles Office; his early involvement in politics as a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) (from 1950); the formation of the Democratic Labor Party (1955); his high-profile appearances on television quiz shows; his career in teaching; being elected to the Victorian Parliament (1972) and the Australian House of Representatives (1977); his work as Minister for Science (1983-1990); descriptions of Australian Prime Ministers (Whitlam, Fraser, Hayden, Hawke, Keating, Howard) that he encountered during his political career; the character and political achievements of those Prime Ministers.

Jones discusses his career in television and talk-back radio; descriptions of other high-profile political and public figures that he encountered during his political and media careers; descriptions of working in Old Parliament House and New Parliament House; trends and changes in the social and political landscape from the post-war period until 2011; numerous anecdotes regarding political machinations, factionalism and leadership struggles; key social and political issues from during this time (eg. the death penalty, communism, the WWII execution of New Guineans, the Whitlam dismissal, climate change); his concern with long-range issues, and public, media and political reaction to this; his writing and published works; his role models and influences; friendships; various Australian and international boards, councils, committees and organisations that he has been involved with; his collecting and other hobbies; particular authors and works of literature; reflections on his career, achievements, influence and experiences.
