- Summary:
-
Initially, the author states his personal philosophy of guidance. He then describes the potential resistances, to an elementary guidance program, by amdinistrators, teachers and parents. These, he feels, can be overcome through a public relations approach which facilitates communication, develops understanding and promotes involvement. Possible concrete steps are enumerated. A breakdown of the author's work week shows that his time is distributed among teaching guidance classes, counseling, group work, and teacher collaboration. Several of his instructional methods are briefly discussed. It is the author's feeling that counseling is the most crucial function. Thirteen case studies are included which provide a range of situations likely to be encountered in elementary guidance. Evaluations of the pilot program by the principal, teachers and students are summarized and obviously weigh heavily on the author's concluding suggestions for possible changes, priorities and improvements.
