- Summary:
-
The present status of environmental science--the study of all the systems of air, land, water, energy, and life that surround man--is examined historically and in terms of needed solutions to problems caused by the interactions of man with components of his environment. It is concluded that, at present, science can not provide the tools to fully meet the "chanllenge" of environmental problems perceived by the public, legislators and scientists, for it has not been possible to derive general principles of practical utility from the complex and diverse interactions in the environment. It is recommended that mechanisms for the provision and allocation of resources, and the determination of priorities, be established by government to guide the concurrent advance of environmental science on the three levels of basic disciplinary research, intermediate scale (regional) systems analyses, and global predictive models. A manpower shortage is recognized and recommendations to alleviate it are made. Four examples of problems requiring the application of environmental science are illustrated and briefly discussed: fisheries resources, magnetic field reversals, grassland ecosystems, and oceanographic and meteorological interactions.
